What packaging for the future ?
NOT TO BE MISSED

With nearly 200,000 tons of fish landed at the fish auctions on all its
coasts, France is a major protagonist in European seafood products.
Its oysters are exported to 80 countries and the dynamic of its wide
network of companies involved in end-of-the-line products extends
to all consumption segments: fresh, frozen, processed, catering or retail. All year round, FranceAgriMer supports professionals in the fishing and aquaculture sectors by providing information and assistance.
As every year, the establishment is monitoring the 994 m² Espace
France, which is located in Hall 7 of Seafood Expo Global. 44 companies will be present to promote their know-how, both on traditional
products and the most innovative ones.
For finished products transparency, reduced weight and durability are required.
Alternative materials? - Today, all the
links in the supply chain control temperatures and along a respected cold chain,
cardboard is gaining market share, especially for frozen products. Delivered flat,
it requires ten to fifteen times less room
for transport or storage, provided you
have a machine to format the final crate.
Otherwise, companies are exposed to
heavy handling requirements. From the
fish wholesaler to the supermarket, in
direct, cardboard can potentially, on certain formats, replace EPS. On the other
hand, the longer the transit time and
the more prone to handling, the more
fish merchants remain loyal to EPS for its
mechanical strength and insulation qualities. In terms of innovation, Cascades,
the company from Quebec, offers its
range of Thermafresh containers. Made
of recycled cardboard laminated to a
Bopp film, lined with an outer wall made
of recyclable corrugated cardboard,
they offer capacities from 6 to 50 litres.
Delivered flat, printable and suitable for
palletising, they ensure freshness maintained at 4°C.

Better vacuuming now allows the usebefore date to be extended, without adding preservatives, while still offering an
attractive look thanks to the skin effect.

The work which the Greek leader for sea bass and sea bream farming
- and meagre and common sea bream as well- has been carrying out
since 2013 with AB Vassilopoulos- a brand affiliated to the Ahold-Delhaize group- and with the Greek WWF, regarding the improvement
of practices on its three breeding farms, is coming to a successful
conclusion. « The outcome of this pioneer initiative demonstrates how
strong and efficient the cooperation of strategic stakeholders of the
supply chain can be, in order to reduce the impact of this industry»,

Polystyrene still has fans - From sea to
plate, seafood products require special
conditions to go down the chain that
leads them to the consumer. Their packaging must meet various standards: cold,
water-tightness, conservation, recyclability, attractiveness, compatibility with
heating methods, eco-design, etc. From
the outset, the polystyrene box is still
highly prized for its insulation and watertight properties. Invented in 1967, EPS
is a material which, combined with ice,
has revolutionized the packaging and
transport of fresh seafood. The consumer appreciates its whiteness, while the
fish wholesaler is often lucky enough to
have a supplier nearby. In addition, these
fish boxes are now recyclable as soon as
a collection is organised from the final recipients. However, beware of tightened
controls concerning the storage of highly
flammable petrochemical packaging.
