Leur conception se base sur des critères d'optimisation financière, afin
d'offrir soit un meilleur contrôle des risques, soit une optimisation des
rendements.
Par exemple, en partant du constat que la volatilité a tendance à augmenter
en situation de marché baissier et à diminuer en situation de
marché haussier, les structureurs ont cherché comment contrôler et
limiter les effets de ces mouvements sur la valeur d'un indice. C'est la
genèse du mécanisme dynamique d'Iso Vol.
La volatilité est ici utilisée comme un outil de contrôle du risque.
- Fonctionnement du mécanisme Iso Vol
Un niveau cible de risque, au travers d'un budget de volatilité (volatilité
cible) est défini ex-ante. L'Iso Vol n'exposera l'investisseur à l'indice sousjacent
que dans la limite de ce budget, soit un niveau maximum d'exposition
à celui-ci.
Le mécanisme va ajuster quotidiennement l'allocation entre l'indice
sous-jacent et le marché monétaire de façon à respecter le niveau cible de
risque défini au départ.
Chaque jour, l'évolution du sous-jacent sur les 20 derniers jours ouvrés
est observée pour calculer le niveau de volatilité réalisé à 20 jours. En
fonction de l'évolution de ce niveau, une part plus ou moins importante
de l'investissement est allouée à l'indice sous-jacent, l'autre étant placée
en monétaire :
* lorsque la volatilité réalisée est supérieure au niveau cible défini, seule
une partie de l'investissement est allouée au sous-jacent et le reste est
placé sans risque sur le marché monétaire. Cela permet de diminuer le
niveau de risque de l'investissement.
* lorsque la volatilité réalisée est inférieure au niveau cible défini, l'allocation
dans l'indice sous-jacent est supérieure à l'investissement initial
(dans la limite d'une exposition maximale définie au départ) via financement.
Cela permet d'accroître le potentiel de rendement.
