Fonctionnement (deux cas possibles) :
- 1er cas : si le cours EUR/USD est inférieur à 1,0975 à la date d'expiration,
le client conserve ses EUR.
La contrepartie, acheteuse du call EUR/put USD, n'a aucun intérêt à exercer
son option pour acheter de l'EUR à 1,0975 car elle peut en acquérir dans le
marché à un cours inférieur. Pour un client qui renouvelle une position
comme dans cet exemple, le risque principal est de connaître une dépréciation
de l'EUR contre l'USD.
Pour l'investisseur dont la devise initiale était l'USD, le risque est de ne pouvoir
réaliser une opération de vente EUR/achat de ses USD au cours de
1,0975. Cette stratégie de renouvellement n'offrira aucun taux de rémunération
si la probabilité d'être convertie dans l'autre devise est très faible en
raison d'un niveau de conversion éloigné du cours du marché. Il est préférable,
dans une telle configuration, de couper la position pour éviter « de
courir après le marché » et d'accroître la perte potentielle.
- 2e cas : si le cours EUR/USD est supérieur à 1,0975 à la date d'expiration,
le client est remboursé en USD au cours de 1,0975.
Dans cette configuration, la contrepartie a un avantage à exercer son option,
car cela lui permet d'acquérir des EUR contre USD à 1,0975 sachant qu'elle
peut les revendre immédiatement dans le marché interbancaire en réalisant
une plus-value. Pour l'investisseur initial, ce deuxième exercice d'option lui
permet de retrouver ses USD d'origine en les rachetant au cours identique de
la première opération : 1,0975. Il aura ainsi perçu 12,00 % puis 10,00 % à
comparer à des taux respectifs de 5,35 % en dépôt à terme USD sur un mois
et de 3,60 % pour un placement EUR sur un mois.
Cas particuliers
A * Comment savoir sur quel niveau déterminer le cours de
conversion ?
Le premier principe de base est d'avoir un cours de conversion meilleur
que le cours spot le jour de la transaction. Si l'EUR/USD cote 1,2410 et
que le client a des EUR en portefeuille, il est plus avantageux de vendre
ses EUR pour acheter de l'USD à 1,2600 qu'à 1,2200. Le cours de
conversion pour une devise cotée au certain sera donc supérieur au cours
