Working Time and Work Intensity in Portuguese Courts
I can see from my [female] colleagues who have children. Their availability for work and for
everything else outside of work is different from mine. Just yesterday, I turned off the computer
at 11:30 at night. My [female] colleagues do that too. They do this, obviously, with more sacrifice.

Finally, when referring to the sacrifices that several professionals make with
regard to their daily working hours, the following interviewee reinforced the need
to act in the face of the lack of human resources in the courts, lest people " work
themselves to death. " In the court clerk's own words:
Work has been increasing exponentially. People have a right to be with their family, not work
themselves to death. Court services should have enough staff for the amount of service involved,
so that people are not forced to come in at 6 in the morning or leave at 8 in the evening.

The analysis of the collected quantitative and qualitative data shows that, in
spite of the long hours, with severe impact on the capacity, health, and personal life
of the professionals, there is the " feeling " that this is a burden that " comes with the
job. " In these professions, working overtime has become normalized, a fact admitted
and accepted as necessary so that justice can function in the interest of citizens.
III. 2. Work Intensity: The Weight of Numbers
The global mean of work intensity is 3.52. This means that work intensity has a
probable higher impact on professional performance than working time. In other
words, the " pace of work " and " emotional demands " in particular, with the multiple
features involved, could have more negative impact and corresponding effects on
the quality of the work performed. In general, however, all the statements correspond
to higher values when compared with those of the working time index. The
" numbers " probably entail a direct impact on the professionals' quality of work
and in their personal life (family and health). This index will, thus, be analyzed to
better understand this potential impact.
