MEET A
STAFFER
angela

INTERNATIONALLY
KNOWN
IN 2015, Angela Chiang was the integral
voice behind a federal award proposal
which ultimately led to the association
receiving the Market Development
Cooperator Program (MDCP) award to
help promote export projects in Latin
American markets. Since then, the
association has hosted successful trade
missions and other events, helping
members to explore global business
opportunities in emerging markets.
Growing up in the D.C. area, Chiang
was surrounded by a large family,
living only 15 minutes away from
grandparents, aunts and uncles.
"I have two brothers. We are
American-born Chinese and we grew
up in a neighborhood with a small
Asian-minority population," she said.
"My brothers and I sometimes struggled
as we were growing up with fitting into
the American lifestyle and wanted to
distance ourselves from our immigrant
parents. It was not until I was older that
I was more fully able to appreciate the
Chinese culture and understand that
my family's stories, heritage and culture
surround me, enrich me and are an
important part of who and how I am."
Chiang didn't travel far when she
attended the University of Maryland and
graduated with a degree in biology.
"During that time, I interned at the
National Institutes of Health researching
treatment for lymphoma. Although I
can recognize this as a very worthy

cause, I discovered quite quickly that
I was not cut out to work in a lab all
day," she said. "I ultimately decided
not to pursue my science track.
College is in part about testing how
passionate you thought you were
about an area, and being willing to
admit that, in the end, it is not for you
if that ends up being the case."
Her experience at an international
law firm, focusing on trade
remedies and customs issues on
behalf of companies exporting
products to the U.S., made her a
unique fit in the international affairs
department at the association.
"Working in the private sector
means keeping your eye on the
bottom line profit - so I understand
that our members' businesses need
to show a profit and we can help
them in indirect ways to achieve that,"
she said. "Working in the non-profit
arena, there is a greater sense of
community and support as we fulfill
a shared mission. In our case here,
it is serving our membership and
advancing industry objectives."
Chiang spends most of her free
time with her husband and one-yearold daughter, doing DIY projects
around the house, refinishing furniture,
crafts projects and cooking. She also
has taken up another worthy cause
by helping to eradicate modern-day
slavery with non-profit organizations.
