Global Vehicle Registrations
Global vehicle registrations surpassed the 1 billion
unit mark in 2016 for the fifth consecutive year. Vehicle
registrations increased worldwide by 4.6 percent from 1.219
billion in 2015 to 1.275 billion in 2016. Asia had the highest
number of registered vehicles, accounting for 31.2 percent
of the global fleet, followed by Europe's 30.1 percent, North
America's 26.9 percent, South America's 5.8 percent and
5.4 percent in the Middle East and Africa. The top vehicleowning nations included the U.S., with 278.8 million vehicles,
China (161.5 million vehicles), Japan (77.3 million vehicles)
and Russia (48.9 million vehicles). The U.S. and New Zealand
recorded the lowest vehicle-to-person ratio with 1.2 vehicles
per person. Canada and Australia are both second with
one vehicle per 1.3 persons. By contrast, China, the most
populous nation in the world, has fewer vehicles. China has
1.3 billion of the world's 7.4 billion people, but only 161.5
million vehicles for a ratio of one vehicle per 9.5 persons.
