The Many Cars of Lothar Schuettler
a.k.a. Jack & Mike's Excellent Adventure

Two dB editors set off on a quest to experience the ultimate BMW collection of Lothar Schuettler
with the BMW builder and restorer himself as their guide.
Jack's Reflections
The story begins with Jack Raymond's
reflections on the visit to Lothar's home
and workshop.
The editors of dB had the great
good fortune to spend a few hours
recently with the inestimable Lothar
Schuettler: car collector, restorer, and
enthusiast extraordinaire. This is his
story, and the story of a sunny, mild
afternoon spent with him and his cars.
Born in 1941, Lothar came to
these shores from Germany in the fall of
1968. Since he spoke no English, but
did " speak " cars, his first job here was
as an automotive technician at VOB.
After a time, Lothar advanced to
become the shop foreman and then the
service manager at VOB. Eventually,
Lothar decided that it was time to branch off on his own and do things his
way, and he founded BMW Excluservice in Rockville in 1984. Excluservice
has been a thriving auto service business specializing in BMWs ever since.
Lothar has a well-deserved reputation as a restorer of cars. Based on

various photos, I could tell from the
manner of the arrangement of
collections of car parts, waiting to be
turned back into cars, that Lothar has
meticulous attention to organization
and detail. He makes sure that every
task is done well and done right.
As a restorer and collector,

Lothar's claim to fame is his 1937 328.
Before being restored, this car was
literally a collection of parts in boxes.
Lothar proudly explained that he does
almost all of the work himself (except
for finish painting), including welding
and grinding. After a six-year effort,
when it was completed, this pre-WWII
car looked like it had just rolled off the
showroom floor. As people in automotive
circles became aware of the car,
its reputation grew, until he was invited to bring it to Pebble Beach. The car
won Best in Class at the Concours d'Elegance and was a crowd favorite.
Did I mention that Lothar treated me to a brisk ride around the
neighborhood? It's not often that I get to ride shotgun in a million dollar,
