of the cars that saved BMW. " He
added " when you get behind the
wheel of a 2002, it is automotive fun
times infinity. " Greg said the 2002 is
" a well-balanced car " and a " classic
BMW benchmark. "
A question and answer session
then followed. One attendee asked
about Hagerty's condition scale (one
to four). Dave expanded on his
earlier comments. A " #1 " car being
perfect, a " #4 " car isn't bad, it just has
some obvious flaws. A " #3 " car is a
" driver " , to which Dave added " there's
nothing wrong with a driver. My
collection has a lot of " #3 " s. There's a
lot of freedom to owning a " #3 " - you
can take it out on weekends and not
check the weather for rain every 15
minutes. "
The next question was about
how and where Hagerty determines
prices and values. Dave and Greg
talked about the teams of people that

scour online classifieds, online
auctions, in-person auctions, dealerships, and many other places cars are
sold. They have professionals look at
and assess these vehicles' conditions
and enter the data into Hagerty's database - the largest (collector car database) in the world. "
An attendee asked, " Where do
you see the BMW brand going in the
next 20 years? " Greg pointed out that
it's hard to even know what will
happen in the next two years, let alone
20, but that " BMW has a good track
record and produces cars that get
enthusiasts excited. " Dave added that
BMW is a " brand that has great resonance around the world. It continues
to grow and BMW has done a good
job managing their brand. "
Given the uniqueness of events
in 2020, an attendee asked how the
cancellation of in-person and on-site
auctions has affected the market.

Dave said that Bring a Trailer's business grew 60-70% and that competing online auction houses, like Doug
Demuro's Cars & Bids, have come
onto the scene. He said he expects
bigger auctions will come back when
the pandemic subsides. He noted that
since the beginning of the pandemic,
he has seen more collector cars out
and driving on " fun roads " than in the
past, as driving is a socially-distanced
activity. Greg added that while many
people were holding their breath to
see what happened, he has been
pleasantly surprised with the
resilience of the collector car market.
When asked what more modern
M cars, such as the Z4 M or M4 GTS,
will be collector cars in the future,
Greg responded with " any enthusiast
car with excitement around it (today)
will continue to have excitement. "
Dave's advice was to " go hang out
with 20-year olds and see what they

are excited about now " as that will
show what will become collectible
later.
Once the questions had wrapped
up, Paul thanked our guests for
attending. Not only do Dave and Greg
have great knowledge of the BMW
market, but they also have vast knowledge of the collector market as a
whole. I could tell they both have a lot
of love and enthusiasm for their work
based on their candid assessments
and responses to questions. What
better way to spend a Thursday afternoon than learning more about our
favorite marque from the pros. A big
thanks to the panelists, Paul Seto,
Dave Kinney, and Greg Ingold! And a
special thanks to Kelly Juergensen,
Hagerty, and NCC for putting on such
an interesting and engaging virtual
