style. The design seems ready
made for the installation of a fivepoint harness. The added convenience of power seat-back adjustments and the manual adjustable
thigh support enhances the
"upscale" performance feel. It
would not surprise us to learn that
engineers from Recaro, Momo, and
Sparco have purchased these seats
to "reverse engineer", producing
design cues for their next generation racecar seat design.
While we yearn for the classic
driver's-side-biased center control
stack design (no doubt a victim
of many bean-counter battles), all
the controls are ergonomically
designed to be instinctively operated by the driver. The "M" steering
wheel begs the driver to explore this
vehicle's driving limits.
Perhaps it's an illusion, but the
X2 M35i's rear seats seem to be
more supportive than those of
the "base" model. And even with
the low roof line, our full-sized
American rear passengers commented on the comfort in the rear
seating area.
As with all their products, the
BMW engineers have done an outstanding job in squeezing every bit

base X2 model (with SensaTech
upholstery, base stereo, no premium package) to the base X2 M35i,
the price difference is $8,000.00.
Keep in mind, there's a $6,000 price
difference between the base Golf
and the base GTI.
For BMW, transversely mounted front-wheel-drive drivetrains are
here to stay. BMW's outstanding
intelligent all-wheel-drive system
gives the X2 a "tossability" factor
that one cannot obtain with rearwheel-drive vehicles. If you're in
the market for a daily driver or a
second vehicle, give the X2 M35i a
spin. You may agree that BMW has
developed the ideal no-compromise, active-performance-lifestyle
vehicle.

Whether we were making the "big
box" warehouse club run or transporting four adults with camera
equipment for working a classic car
show, the X2's cargo area was more
than up for the task.
In our review of the "base" X2,
we declared it be "the ideal daily
driver for the driving enthusiast
who had the need to haul stuff".
It would be the SAV that would have
those other kids (who are riding in
their parents' American and

Japanese "sport utes") pointing and
asking for one. With an as-tested
price of $45,000 (with SensaTech
upholstery), the "base" X2 represents an outstanding value.
The as-tested price of our X2
M35i was a little over $55,000.
This is a deceptively high price
differential compared to the base
X2, because our X2 M35i was
equipped with the outstanding,
optional leather-covered sport seats
and the Harmon Kardon entertainment system. When comparing the
