replacing the transmission fluid in
his 1999 528i; and James
Churbuck, taking care of multiple
fluid changes for his 2007 Z4
Coupe.
Among other projects, DIY
regular John Francis replaced
thrust-arm bushings on his 2008
M3 sedan.
Brian LoVecchio
swapped the oil cooler on his 2011
335is coupe. John Key replaced the
brake pads, rotors, and lines on his
super clean 2010 535i M-Sport.
Terence Seawright's 2011 328i
received new brake pads as well as
a new battery. Bob Hollander got
his 2011 Z4 ready for winter with an
underbody inspection and engine
degreasing. By the same token,

Kelvin Hao did a new "roady
inspection" on his 2001 M
Roadster. And Louis Mezo dutifully
performed work on the front
suspension components, ASC
throttle actuator, and rear brakes of
his 1998 528i.
One of the best aspects of an
NCC DIY event is that several members come to lend DIY participants
a helping hand, literally and figuratively. As a helper myself, I can
vouch for the fact that a DIY event is
just as valuable for those helping as
for the participants engaged in the
primary DIY work, as it represents
educational experience like no
other when it comes to learning
about the internal workings of BMW
automobiles. Additional members
who attended as helpers included
DIY co-chair Mary Snyder,
Jagadesh Yellapu, Matt Ytzen, Geoff
Young, and Kevin Kuo. Kevin very
graciously brought a laptop computer equipped with BMW
Integrated Service Technical
Application (ISTA), which is used
for diagnostics and reprogramming
on BMW and MINI vehicles.
Having access to ISTA really paid
off for member Mindi Villaroman,
whose 2008 335i convertible
required repairs not of the DIY
variety to its Dynamic Stability
Control system. Thanks to Kevin's
assistance with diagnostics using
ISTA, Mindi was able to coordinate
the appropriate jobs in a future visit
to BMW of Sterling's Service
department.
Of course, as NCC President
Paul Seto and Vice-President
James Laws (both of whom stopped
by to visit) regularly point out, an
event like this simply would not be
complete without ample food for
everyone. Fortunately, both the
NCC DIY Committee and BMW of
Sterling delivered wholeheartedly
on that measure. Participants were
