President'sMessage
Who would have thought that this pandemic would still be a thing? For any other year,
we would have had about 40 event-days by now. While we hold out hope that we
can reschedule some of them in the upcoming months, many big events have become
victims of COVID-19: the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, Oktoberfest Forever in
Palm Springs, and our IMSA car corral at VIR. My annual vacation plans are turned
upside down since we can't really go anywhere. I guess I can look forward to several
staycations, meaning even more time spent at home.....ugh!
As a chapter, we did have a few events take place, which you'll read about in this
issue. Luckily those events went off without a hitch, thanks to our volunteers and
members being mindful of current health and safety protocols. Hopefully in the next
few months we'll be back to enjoying more club events. However, it's vital that
everyone check our website, social media, and email blasts for the most up-to-date
information.
As if COVID-19 hasn't shaken up things enough, this country is also
experiencing unprecedented turmoil regarding race relations and the Black Lives
Matter movement. Personally, one of the things I love most about living in this area
is its diversity. As a native Washingtonian, it's fascinating to see people of all walks
of life come and go. I've seen the drastic changes of many neighborhoods and the
gentrification of the city. And as a member of a minority myself, I'm always aware of
current events and the effects they could have on society. This country is so divided
politically, economically, and socially that we can't even have civil conversations about
what's going on without conflict. However, I've seen some positive changes recently;
the BLM movement has started to get people to listen to and understand what they
didn't know before. Hopefully, this is a starting point and a catalyst for change to
continue. I bring all of this up because I'm proud of what we've built here at NCC.
It's no coincidence that our board is comprised of a great mix of people from different
backgrounds, race, gender, and age. Our board broadly matches the diverse membership we have in the DC area. My longtime elevator speech for NCC always included
that we're the 'biggest' and 'most active' chapter, but we're easily the most 'diverse' too.
We all love BMWs and cars, and we love others who like the same; our inclusiveness
is who we are and who we strive to be. So I'm excited that further change will come
and encourage everyone to help move it forward.
Finally, the one thing that we all wait for every year is upon us: our CCA raffle!
If you haven't seen the promos for the Grand Prize, a one-of-a-kind M5 Competition,
you need to check it out. It's an incredible build and quite possibly the best jackpot
ever! NCC also has a great history of raffle winners throughout the years, and our very
own Ben Wibisono of Baltimore, MD, took home last year's top prize. So, get your
tickets now and maybe winning a new BMW will turn 2020 into a year to
always remember.
