driven by Sean McAlister just behind in fifth. Dillon Machavern qualified
the second Turner M4 in thirteenth. The Fox 120 is a two-hour race. None
of the BMWs were in contention for a championship, so they would be
competing for the race win. To start the race, it was interesting to see the
Supra driven by Zach Veach working his way to the front on lap 14 and leading
for 13 laps until the pit stops. The Toyota Supra, built by BMW, has a
B58 BMW engine. It is effectively a Z4 platform with a hardtop built for
Toyota. Pitstop issues caused the Supra to fall well behind the leaders after
a good showing early. As the race progressed, with strategic pit stops, and
fuel saving, the two Turner cars were stuck out of the top ten while Jeff
Westphal in the CarBahn #39 found his way to finish in third place.
The CarBahn team will look forward to a fresh start in 2025 as will Turner
Motorsports.
The 10-hour Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta is the main attraction, and
we had hopes for a superior performance by the BMW M Hybrid V8s.
We have both the Turner and the Miller GTD/Pro teams in M4 GT3s and we
will enjoy watching them compete, but the top class of GTP cars is of prime
interest. It is always exciting to compete for overall race wins. Practices
showed the entire 11 car GTP field all within 1.5 seconds. The #24 BMW
M Hybrid V8 was typically ahead of the #25 car. For qualifying, it was a
little different as the #25 M Hybrid V8 with Connor De Phillippi behind the
wheel that qualified in 3rd overall with Phillip Eng putting the #24 car in 9th
place. The entire GTP field covered just over 1.2 seconds.
In GTD Robby Foley put the Turner #96 M4 GT3 in 2nd place in GTD
while Madison Snow qualified the #1 Paul Miller Racing M4 10th in
GTD Pro. The race was conducted in beautiful sunny and dry weather with
the temperature reaching a maximum of about 80F and falling to the mid
60s by the end of the race. A significant and surprising statistic was the lack
of safety cars/full-course yellow flags during the race. Full-course yellows
and safety cars allow for the reordering of the field and pit stops under
yellow help to lose less time in the process. Teams that have fallen back (for
a variety of reasons) can make up those lost positions by taking strategic
