or us older (perhaps, " mature " ?) car enthusiasts,
classic TV shows such as Adam-12, CHiPs, and the
Rockford Files are enjoyable because of the cars
and the scenery. As a Southern California native, the
locations have a familiar feel. It's surprising to see the
number of scenes filmed on freeways that were still under
construction. And in the case of Adam-12, the number of
scenes filmed in the Universal Studios Hollywood backlots
is also surprising. These locations, and the classic
American cars, are chicken soup for my Southern
California car culture soul.
I've found a new show that seems to provide that
same comfort for my car enthusiast soul. The BBC show
Celebrity Antique Road Trip pairs two celebrities with two
antique experts, who purchase items from antique shops
throughout the English countryside to resell at auction.
Though I've been lucky to travel the UK enough that the

countryside seems familiar, it's the classic English cars
that are most attract me the most.
Oddly enough, I have yet to watch an episode
featuring a MINI.
Design has always been the charm of English motor
vehicles. English vehicle designers managed to develop
exteriors that invoke sensual flows. Their ability to
integrate materials that have a fine tactile feel with flowing,
pleasing shapes, have made English vehicle interiors an
industry benchmark.
When BMW decided to revive the MINI brand, they
were quite aware of the high design bar. BMW's ability to
combine English design, German engineering and
manufacturing, and American marketing in the MINI,
quickly made the MINI the most sought after vehicle in
the North American market.
