To further leverage MINI's
motoring heritage, the " John Cooper
Works " version was developed.
As with BMW's highly successful
M-sport versions, the " JCW "
versions had enough performance
and design enhancements to distinguish
themselves within their target
market segment. In short, the " base "
MINIs would say, " Let's Motor " ,
while the " JCW " models would say,
" Let's have some fun! "
When the MINI Cooper sales
began to slow, BMW took a page
from Mini's playbook and tried to
expand the brand's market appeal by
offering larger vehicles. Hopefully,
throughout the years you've read
the MINI articles featured in der
Bayerische, including " Jumbo
Shrimp " and " MINI to the Max " .
While total annual US MINI sales
seem to have stabilized around
35,000 (from the peak of over
60,000), the Countryman, the " SUV "
of the MINI lineup that accounts for
30 percent of MINI sales, is growing
in popularity.
There is good reason for the
Countryman's growing popularity.

First, MINI rationalized its product
line up by eliminating the Clubman.
Second, MINI focused on understanding
the needs of an SUV buyer
before applying the unique MINI
charm.
We went bi-coastal for this
product review, driving a
Countryman S in the National
Capital Chapter region and a
Countryman JCW in the Silicon
Valley.
