large turnouts of the National
Capital Chapter. We truly have an
outstanding chapter with
dedicated volunteers who make it
possible.
The drive itself was mostly
uneventful, except for the traffic.
Unlike the DMV, where left-lane
campers tend to be a bit more
uncommon, it seemed like many
down here were auditioning
for this role on the two-lane
highways. As the number of
Bojangles' sightings increased
and the Southern accents grew
stronger, I knew my destination
was near.
After hours of driving and
seasoned professionals, each with
a wealth of knowledge and motorsports
pedigree. The day began
with a bit of classroom instruction
and expectation setting by Doug
Verner who has run the trip for over
20 years, then my first module was
skid pad/car control in a new M3
Competition. There were a total of
about eight different modules with
some overlap of skills for each.
Most of the modules started with a
concept and then the afternoon
module built on linking those
concepts together.
The highlight was getting

frequent fuel stops to replenish
my smallish gas tank, the BMW Performance Center stood before me, a shiny
oasis for BMW enthusiasts surrounded by the expansive BMW plant complex
in Spartanburg, SC. The center itself was impressive, with a sprawling track
and modern facility that promised an unforgettable experience, reminiscent of
what I remembered. After a brief exploration, we headed to the BMW CCA
Foundation Museum to see the MINI exhibit on display and then joined the
rest of the NCC group for dinner.
The M School program started early Saturday. The instructors were

behind the wheel of various M
models and pushing them toward
their limits on the track. There's
something special about feeling the raw power of an M car, the engine roaring
with a symphony of horsepower as you navigate the twists and turns of the
track. What had the biggest impact, however, were the demo laps with the
instructors who drove far closer to the limits than the students. The most
striking example was their braking technique-later and harder than I dared.
I'm not ashamed to admit there was considerable " pucker factor " as my
instructor sped down the back straightaway in a new M4 Competition xDrive,
passing the number three braking marker while still accelerating.
