At lap 23, during caution laps' pit stops, the #96 did a stop that was 30
seconds faster than the #95 and moved up 18 positions in two laps.
From there it was a race to the front with the #72 Murillo Racing AMG and his
#95 teammate. This gave Turner Motorsports the one-two with Foley winning
in the #96 and Cameron Lawrence in the #95 in second. A first win for the
new G82 M4 GT4 and a one-two for the Turner Team, as well. This was one
of the most impressive team victories that I can remember.
The Sebring 12 Hours is one of the biggest challenges in motorsports.
Not only is a twelve hour race a major test, but the bumps of Sebring only
increase the difficulty. I think all the teams have learned that they must test on
Sebring's historic concrete runways from WWII. From time to time, some
repaving happens at Sebring, but everyone agrees, don't change the bumps.
Daytona has its wide long banked straights, the bus stop and a manufactured
infield, where Sebring is a true, somewhat narrow, road course.
We anticipated seeing the new GTP cars compete. Would the BoP
adjustments to the GTD cars make any difference? Drivers for the BMW M
Hybrid V8 were Philip Eng, Augusto Farfus & Marko Wittmann in the #24 car
and Connor De Phillippi, Nick Yelloly & Sheldon van der Linden in the #25
car. After practice and qualifying, we saw Cadillacs at the front with the Acuras
close behind. The BMW M Hybrid V8s were somewhat closer to the front than
at Daytona, but still in the back of the group with the Porsches.
The #31 Cadillac was on pole with a 1:45.836 with the #24 BMW M Hybrid
V8 just under a second behind, while the #25 was over a second off the pace.
In GT, the qualifying order had not been changed substantially with the BMWs
mid-pack and the Porsches just behind. Drivers in the #95 GTD Pro were: Bill
Auberlen, Chandler Hull & John Edwards. The #95 M4 GT3 in GTD Pro lost
its qualifying time when the driver exited the car prior to being instructed to do
so by the officials. The #9 Pfaff Porsche also fell into the same error.
So, they would start from the back after a tough lesson. Fastest of the BMW
GTDs was the Paul Miller Racing #1 M4 GT3 driven by Brian Sellers, Madison
Snow & Corey Lewis slotting into the sixth position with the #96 Turner car
just behind in seventh. Drivers in the #96 were Patrick Gallagher, Michael
Dinan & Robby Foley.
