h, the stirring passions of
springtime - warm sunshine,
flowers waking up, first grass
mowing, and car guys' and gals'
thoughts turn to car shows!
To jumpstart that mindset, the
National Capital Chapter hosted the
39th Deutsche Marque Concours
d'Elegance (DMC) on May 7 at
Occoquan Regional Park in Virginia.
DMC is an annual automotive event
that brings out some of the
best examples of vintage and
modern vehicles from Deutschland
(Germany). Each year, automotive
clubs in the greater Washington,
D.C. area join forces to showcase
the best of the best: Mercedes-Benz
Club of America's (MBCA) Greater
6
Washington Section, Audi Club's
Potomac-Chesapeake Chapter, and
BMW CCA's National Capital
Chapter (NCC).
Organizing this event and running
it smoothly, from early morning
to the final field clearing, is the job
of NCC Concours Chairman John
McWilliams. John has shepherded
this event since 2009. He is the tireless
organizer who works with the
other clubs to lock down the date,
the location, the award schedule,
and the cheese and wine party. John
has been known to recruit his father,
long-term club members, and
knowledgeable car experts to be the
judges who will scrutinize your car's
exterior (50 points), interior (50
points), trunk/storage (30 points),
and engine bay (40 points). John's
tireless effort and good nature
makes the day run smoothly.

The gods of the automobile
smiled on the weather as the forecasts
for the day were less than
perfect as the event date
approached. Sunny with a touch of
sunburn were the actual results.
Early morning arrivals found the
field crowded with owners scurrying
about attending to last minute
details of buffing, wiping, or even
vacuuming (for those who had the
foresight to bring along a batterypowered
version). The field of cars
was full of excellent examples of
joyous colors and shiny pampered
vehicles from the classic 2002 all the
way to newer models.
Each auto club had their own
staging areas, judges, and excellent
examples, so no matter what type of
vehicle might interest you (touring,
performance, or top-down wind in
your hair driving), there were a few to
view and drool over. One of the great
advantages in attending this event as
a participant or a spectator is that
you can ask questions. " Where did
you find this car? How long have
you owned it? How do you keep it
looking like new? I noticed you have
replaced XX. What tips can you
share, since I need to do that to my
