dB: Okay, off to a good start!
How did you follow that up?
SR: Well, in the 2017 dBarticle
Mike mentioned how it might
be a while before he was able to
return to Club Racing. Despite
his initial success, he knew he
would have to be patient as
other priorities, including our
then 5-year-old daughter, were
more important. In the meantime,
we stayed active with the
NCC HPDE program and
focused on building our
instructor skillsets.
Then, in September 2019,
Mike entered his first
endurance race in the American Endurance Racing (AER) series in a modified
NA MX-5 Miata at Summit Point with fellow BMW CCA Club Racers Jeff
Quesenberry and Todd Brown, along with Liberty Autosport team principal
Steve Hunt. In November 2021, Mike entered his second endurance race
with AER at New Jersey Motorsports Park in a Spec E46 car owned by fellow
NCC Instructor and BMW CCA Club Racer Bill Bass. Team " Zip Tie Racing "
also includes NCC members Bobby Getz, Alex Pirpiris and
Brendan O'Rourke.
dB: I've heard reference to a story about stolen brakes. Care to elaborate?
SR: (Mike laughs) OK, yes I will admit it. I stole the big brake kit off Anne's
sedan and put them on my coupe. But the story ends well! In October 2018,
at a New Jersey Chapter BMW HPDE at Shenandoah, I had a rear brake pad
fail (disintegrate) on the coupe which resulted in me having an off-track
excursion and minor impact with a SAFER barrier. So naturally, I decided I
needed better brakes. And I just happened to know of a street-oriented E36
with a big brake kit that was really overkill (read: expensive!) for driving on

the street. (Anne: " Hey! " ) So I
somehow convinced Anne that
it made sense for the big
brakes to be on the coupe,
since it had a roll bar, seats,
harnesses, etc. already and
was more of a track-only car.
And I may have promised her
that I would put in a seat
slider so that she could drive it
too. Well, procrastination is
a thing and though Tommy
Ivic dutifully performed the
brake swap (while dispensing
marriage advice), it may have
taken me a few (3) years to
really get that seat set up
properly to where Anne could
kind of almost maybe see over the steering wheel.
dB: OK Mike, this is not sounding good for you! How does this story
end well?
SR: Bear with me! Enter our third E36 M3 (aptly named " 3Mily " (pronounced
Emily)). One early morning in November 2022, an Alpine White 1995 M3
located near Richmond, VA popped up on Facebook Marketplace. Brendan
O'Rourke posted it in the Team Zip Tie Racing group text thread. It seemed like
a great deal. The interior was already stripped and the owner had lost interest
in building it into a track car. Sound familiar? Mike contacted the seller right
away and made a cash offer. Twelve hours later, we were driving home a third
E36 M3! At first, the end goal was not definite. Mike still wanted to get more
into BMW CCA Club Racing. But we needed to get the car checked out by
Tommy before committing to a race build. A week later, a trip up to TIER Car
Care resulted in a stamp of approval from Tommy and DJ to move forward!
So, to bring it back around, part of the justification for building the race car is
that Anne could now have her big brakes back! Just on the coupe!
