dB: I don't know Mike, that still
seems a little, shall we say, rude? So
now what's the plan for the sedan?
SR: Well, we recently took the sedan
on a road trip to the BMW
Performance Center in Greer, SC for
the 50th Anniversary of M
Celebration. This was a great weekend
getaway where we got to see
some amazing history and learn more
about the BMW Motorsports legacy.
The sedan is a fantastic road trip
cruiser. We plan to keep it as a fun
weekend car to use for other nonHPDE
events with the NCC (pie runs,
tours, etc).
dB: Any more E36s in your future?
SR: Yes! Mike will one day add an E36/8 Clownshoe to the garage and drive
it to DorkFest to be with his fellow Dorks. He will redeem the " M-Coupon "
that Anne gave him for Christmas in 2009 after a mint S54 example fell
through. He's not picky about the color, as long as it's Laguna Seca Blue, Steel
Grey or Alpine White! Also, we might be in the market for a nice 318ti in about
5 years when Lily starts driving. Anne is always on the prowl for a Classic
MINI, with or without a VTEC swap.
dB: How did Saulgood Racing come about?
SR: A few years back (before Breaking Bad), one of Mike's co-workers came
up with the nickname " Michael Saulgood " (say it with ESPN's Chris Berman
voice). This kind of stuck and we thought it would make a good name for a
race team. It's just been sitting on the shelf percolating for years waiting for
the right moment to come to fruition. Now the timing has just kind of worked
out and we feel in a better position to be able to start building this brand while
balancing our other commitments.
We're not sure why so many good
things have happened in Novembers.
Maybe it's somehow related to a lunar
eclipse or other celestial event, but we
have been extremely fortunate and
lucky to know the right people and be
in the right place at the right time to
jump on these opportunities that have
been presented to us. It's been a
blessing to be involved in this
Chapter where we have met some of
our best friends and made so many
fun memories.

dB: What are your goals?
SR: From a racing standpoint, it seems like the obvious goals are just to have
fun, learn more about the E36 platform, keep improving our driving skills,
become competitive over the next few years and maybe promote a cause along
the way. At first we'll probably stick to Summit Point while we are on the steepest
part of the learning curve. Eventually we'll build up to a 6 or 7 BMW CCA
Club Race season at the major tracks on the East Coast. A longer-term goal
would be to win a National Championship in the I-Sport class maybe 5 years
down the road. As our daughter gets older and closer to driving age,
it would be cool if she is attracted to the sport. But so far, it hasn't been a
strong draw so we won't force it.
dB: Sounds awesome! How can we follow you?
SR: We're still in the early stages, but we plan to create a social media
presence and YouTube channel, etc. Give us a few months and search for
Saulgood Racing on the major platforms. We'd love to have you follow along
as we build the race car and start our campaign in 2023 and beyond!
