time. The famous Bugatti horseshoe
grill still seen on modern Bugatti
cars was first featured on a 1913
Bugatti. The cars weren't just automotive
eye-candy, they were hightech
and light-weight. At the same
time that Henry Ford was building
the Model T and bringing cars to
the masses, Bugatti was building
4-valves-per-cylinder overheadcam
engines and putting these 1.5L
4-cylinder engines in a chassis that
weighed 700 lbs, which is about half
the weight of a 1913 Model T
Touring car. Needless to say, this
made for quick acceleration and
agility for that period.
This brings us to our first of
three Demo Day cars, the Type 35.
When you think of a pre-WWII
Bugatti, the Type 35 is very likely
what you're thinking of. To some,
this car represents the high point of
success for Bugatti, with its naturally

aspirated, SOHC, straight-8 2.0L
engine (1.99L actually) that could
rev to 6000 rpm and produce 95 hp
in a car that weighed 1650 lbs.
If you wanted to go racing all you
needed to do was " remove your
headlights and fenders " . This was
the 1920s equivalent of removing
the floormats and emptying our
trunks at an autocross or HPDE
today. These were drivers' cars.
The second car of the demo
was a calmer and plusher roadfocused
coupe, the 1936 Bugatti
Atalante. By the mid-1930s Bugatti
was struggling a bit with their racing
as the German Auto Union (later
Audi/VW) and Alfa Romeo had
monetary assistance from their
respective governments to develop
their cars. Like Shelby and Ferrari,
Bugatti used his racing success to
sell cars to pay for the racing
program's continued development.
Though the Atalante had plush
interiors and a roomier body, the car
still had the same 3.3 L supercharged
racing engine from the Type
35's successor - the Type 59. This
reminds me of the E28 and E34 M5s
that used a racing-derived engine.
