t was August of 2018, I'm
finishing my Strawberry
Daiquiri with a friend, a very
accomplished M engineer
(we'll call him " Brian " ), as he
had been discussing modernday
traction control with me
in the lobby of the Greenville
Marriott. We were soon
wrapping up a visit to the
Performance Center (and COTA
a week earlier) on business to
familiarize ourselves with the
capabilities of the new F90 M5
and fancied a chat about what
BMW had been keeping so
tightly under wraps in the
ivory towers for so long.

" What if we showed this stuff
to enthusiasts? They might enjoy it, what do you think? " , I entertained.
Brian chuckled, his eyes popping out. " Yeah. Good luck with that. "
" Seriously, I really think it's time to take off the gloves. If they applied this
at the track, " I retorted. " No, I agree. " Brian, now looking up and left in
frustration. " Don't take it the wrong way, but you'll need to be seriously
convincing if you're going to get that kind of permission. " I should've put
money on it. I didn't.
Fast forward to late June of '22 and I'm back playing Guest Instructor
at Summit Point Raceway after a frigid-but-fun March HPDE at the

Shenandoah Circuit with BMW
CCA's NCC crew. This was to
be another three-day playtime,
seeing what happens when our
careers mature but our personalities
as enthusiasts (generally
speaking) don't. My ride is a
2018 M6 Gran Coupe in I-alsopractice-litigation
Sapphire
Black Metallic. BMW seems to
think it'll have better odds of
finding a buyer at the track,
seeing as at the last event I
showed up in a Marina Bay
Blue F90 M5 Comp just for an
instructor to take possession
after I " politely " demonstrated
its track perks over a hot lap.
Allegedly there was drifting
involved in that demo, though I cannot confirm or deny it. Three other
instructors who rode along might remember better. Regardless...
Friday morning I arrive bright and early after a 50-minute trek from my
home in Centerville, VA, about an hour before the instructors' meeting.
The weather is humid with clear-ish skies. I park under the deck of the
watchtower by the picnic tables, because of course we can't be leaving
inventory to get baked in the sun. Speaking of which, it occurs to me - my
friend is bringing the sunblock to protect my Irish skin. My friend is
arriving tomorrow. Fantastic.
