Quality of Academic Instruction for
Undergraduates
Reviewers praised the quality and commitment of the faculty. Tufts attracts an international, socially and politically aware student
body, which reviewers found to be a rich
learning environment.
"I found the quality of instruction at Tufts
to be very high. Professors are passionate
about their work and truly care about the
students. All classes are taught by professors; only discussion sections are led
by teaching assistants. Most classes are
small, except for the few intro-level lecture
courses, which have 75-150 students. In my
four years there, I was in only five courses
with more than 25 students, and I took several courses that had five students or less.

The Students Review series is intended to
aid prospective college students in their
search by offering insiders' views of selected
colleges and universities, as expressed by
current undergraduates or recent graduates
who have high academic ability. Note that the
number of reviewers is small. Consider their
personal perspectives as only one factor as
you gather information and impressions from
many sources.
Our reviewers include 31 individuals, who
major(ed) in American studies (1), art history
(1), Asian studies (1), biopsychology (1),
chemical engineering (1), child development
(2), cognitive & brain sciences (1), communications & mass media (1), community health
(1), comparative religion (2), economics
(3), English (2), environmental studies (1),
French (1), German studies (1), history
(2), international relations (6), mathematics
(2), mechanical engineering (2), music (2),
peace & justice studies (1), philosophy (2),
physics (1), political science (3), psychology
(2), sociology (2), and women's and gender
studies (1). (The number of majors exceeds
31 because many reviewers had double
majors.) Reviewers' comments appear within
quotation marks.
The distribution requirements create wellrounded students who can approach topics
from many perspectives."
"Tufts has a wonderful international feel
to it. Almost 10 percent of the student body
comes from abroad, and the second most
popular major is international relations. Students in the College of Liberal Arts must take
six semesters of a language or demonstrate
proficiency, so by the time we graduate,
nearly everyone is fluent in another language. In keeping with this strong language
and cultural emphasis, 50 percent of the
junior class studies abroad, and Tufts has
some incredible study-abroad programs."
"For students interested in international
affairs, having access to Tufts' Fletcher School
of Law & Diplomacy and other relevant
centers such as the Institute for Global Leadership is a fantastic benefit. Tufts also offers
an innovative interdisciplinary major, Peace
& Justice Studies, which is similar to international relations, but with more emphasis
on people and cultures and not as much on
policy. It also has a strong fieldwork component, providing students practical training in
community activism."
"Tufts strongly supports education for
active citizenship. A variety of classes teach
students how to become valuable members of the community by examining social
problems and learning how social change
can happen. Some classes include practical
elements such as volunteering or creating
social activism documentaries. Through the
University College of Citizenship & Public
Service, a program to help prepare Tufts
undergraduates to be active and effective
citizens, students can obtain grants and fellowships to fund projects and internships that
better the local and world communities."
"Tufts effectively straddles the line
between its founding as a liberal arts teaching college and its current status as a major
research university. Faculty members are still
wholly dedicated to teaching students, but
there is incredible research happening on
all levels of the university. A lot of students
choose to get involved with research, and
there are many opportunities to do so. The
great thing about research at Tufts is that it
really is open to anyone of any year or academic program."
"Computer science is now the largest
undergraduate major, beating international
relations by a nose. The community is very
active beyond just coursework; the professors
are great (very involved and supportive),
and there are plenty of opportunities to get
involved with the thriving Boston tech scene
and find an internship or career there. Tufts
also has a program in entrepreneurial leadership for students interested in founding their
own companies."
"Tufts has an Early Assurance Program
for pre-medical and pre-veterinary students.
Highly qualified students apply as sophomores, and successful applicants have assured
admission to Tufts Medical or Veterinary
School as long as they complete all course
requirements and maintain their GPAs."
"Tufts is best known for its programs in
international relations, engineering, and
health sciences, but it has many wonderful, lesser known programs. For example,
Tufts offers dual-degree programs with the
Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the New
England Conservatory of Music for artists and
