Through charitable contributions, the National
Hospice Foundation is able to make a difference in
the lives of the patients and families served by
hospice and palliative care professionals. Our
programs include:
■ CaringInfo brings information to people before a
health crisis, helping individuals and families learn
about, prepare for, and access hospice and
palliative care services.
■ Diversity Fund helps hospice professionals address
ethnic disparities in end-of-life care.
■ Emergency Workforce Support Fund assists
hospice communities when a natural disaster
overwhelms regularly-available resources.
■ Palliative Care fund promotes innovative
strategies to deliver care and the quality of life for
the patient and the patient's family.
■ Pediatrics fund makes best-known practices in
pediatric palliative and hospice care widely
available.
■ Veterans Services programs provide tools and
resources for professionals to recognize the unique
needs of our Veterans under hospice and palliative
care and their families.

Barbara Smith
Mountain Hospice
Bellington, West Virginia
Barbara Smith is the co-founder
of Mountain Hospice, Inc. and
helped prepare documentation to
open the hospice, which accepted
its first patient in 1991.
She has served on the Board of
Directors, Executive Committee
and was a patient-care volunteer
from the very beginning. She also
assisted with a wide range of
other duties as was needed.
Barbara retired from Alderson
Broaddus University in Philippi,
West Virginia, after 36 years,
where she rose to be the Chair of
the Division of the Humanities
and Professor of Literature and
Writing. She has published over
four hundred poems and short
stories and has written some
twenty books of poetry,
nonfiction, and fiction.

Maureen Endee
Tidewell Hospice
Sarasota, Florida
Maureen Endee began her service
at Tidewell Hospice in 1999. Since
then she has given more than
7,500 volunteer hours to the
organization and the patients
and families it serves.
