From the NCHPP President/CEO Section* How Big is I Your Corpus Callosum? By Linda Beushausen RN, PhD, CHPCA suspect that the title of this article may have caused a reaction like "huh?" My sense is that many of you have never talked about your corpus callosum - how big it is, how important it is, or what your exercise program should be for growing it. Let me start by telling you what it is and why it's importance in these fastchanging times. The corpus callosum is defined as the "arched bridge of nervous tissue that connects the two cerebral hemispheres of the brain, allowing communication between the right and left sides." The ability to use our whole brain - and move between the right and left sides quickly and confidently - is a skill that is becoming extremely important to those of us in leadership roles. During a time when working in the same way we have always worked and thinking in the same ways we have always thought will no longer take us where we need to go, our ability to use both sides of our brain - to be innovative and creative as well as analytical and strategic - becomes much more crucial to our success. Insightful authors, such as Marshall Goldsmith, Daniel Goleman, Gary Hamel, Daniel Pink and others, are writing book after book about personal and organizational leadership related to thinking in new ways, doing things differently, and increasing our passion for the mission and our commitment to making a difference in the world. Our corpus callosum is part of the brain's anatomy with which we need to become more familiar. The Benefit of Using That Bridge More Often As Daniel Pink explains in his book, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, the right hemisphere takes care of synthesis, emotional expression, context, and the big picture whereas the left hemisphere handles logic, sequence, literalness, and analysis. He says to think of the sequential/ simultaneous difference like this: the right hemisphere is the picture; the left hemisphere is the thousand words. *The National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals (NCHPP) is comprised of 15 discipline-specific sections that represent the staff and volunteers who work for NHPCO provider-members.
