Integrating Compliance
into Your Daily Operations
A
s hospice regulatory
requirements
increase, it's vital for
compliance to be part of your
everyday operations and your
organization's culture. All hospice
staff needs to understand the
importance of compliance and
how it is integrated into his or
her duties. Gone are the days of
"That's not my job...I take care of
patients." Everyone in a hospice
organization is responsible for
compliance.
At any given moment, there are
more than a half dozen federal or
state auditors who can visit your
program to assess compliance
and quite possibly request large
repayments if your organization
is found to be non-compliant.
Even though having a compliance
program is not yet a regulatory
requirement, it is strongly
recommended.

Compliance Takes Many Forms
There is expected compliance
with the federal and state
hospice regulations, HIPAA,
OSHA, Department of Labor,
IRS, accreditation standards (as
applicable) - the list goes on.
Hospice leadership needs to
look at all of the regulations and
determine how they impact each
position in the organization.
Regulatory requirements should
be incorporated into policy and
procedures, job descriptions,
orientation and ongoing training,
and the daily performance of
each staff member. Your staff
members, in turn, need to be held
accountable for their actions on a
daily basis (and leadership needs
to ensure that accountability).
Don't wait until a surveyor or
auditor appears at your door.
Be proactive by integrating
compliance into your daily
operations - starting today!
