In Celebration of
This year marks 40 years of hospice care in America, an anniversary
that all members should take pride in celebrating.
What began at Connecticut Hospice - founded by Florence Wald in 1974 - is now a valued part of
mainstream healthcare, with 5,500-plus programs providing care to an estimated 1.5 million Americans
each year.1
To recognize this milestone, NHPCO created a beautiful display with key events in the history of hospice.
The display was shared at the Management and Leadership Conference in March, and will be shared
again at the Clinical Team Conference in October. For the benefit of all members, here are just a few
highpoints in hospice's impressive journey.

benefit under Medicare Part B; it
did not pass, but laid a foundation

creating the Medicare Hospice
Benefit (1982).

hospice accreditation (1984).

made permanent, and states were
given the option to include hospice
in their Medicaid programs (1986).
1990s
* ongress passed legislation

calling for a hospice
feasibility study (1992).
* he President's healthcare

reform proposal included
hospice as a nationally
guaranteed benefit (1993).
* CFA's attention to

hospice certification and
recertification resulted in
the first "focused medical
review" (1994).
