Short Takes Deborah Goodman on Being First! Deborah Goodman, APRN, CHPN, CHPCA, has been the CEO of Mountain Hospice in Belington, WV since January of 2000. While she came to the position with many years of healthcare experience, she had not previously worked in hospice or palliative care. So when NHPCO launched the Hospice Manager Development Program (Hospice MDP), she was among the first members to enroll. Now she bears the distinction of being the very first member to complete the program and earn her Level III designation. In this brief interview, she shares some feedback about the experience. Was it worth the time? Yes, and more so than I would have imagined. The Foundational course was an excellent overview of a variety of topics important to hospice management. It was especially valuable to me as a new hospice leader - and continues to be helpful now. Over the next few years, I then took Level II courses, some online which was convenient, and some as pre-conferences during NHPCO's Management and Leadership Conference. I have attended MLC every year since 2000. I started Level III last spring and finished in November. What made you look into it? I decided to take the program for my own professional development and my desire to learn as much as I can about hospice and my leadership role. Even after more than 25 years of work in some management or leadership capacity, I find there is always something new to learn that may benefit me 20 NHPCO NewsLine and the organization where I work. As a hospice CEO I feel it is my duty, as well as my desire, to try to make some positive contribution to the profession and the work of hospice. For me, this begins in the rural mountains of West Virginia. I feel this extends beyond my home because the more knowledgeable and competent our leaders, the better it will be for all of us involved in this important work. What aspects of the Hospice MDP helped you most? The format for Level III is very different from Levels I and II, but the progression of the program and the topics are very appropriate. It began with more basic topics which were built upon. While they were all important and useful, I found the coaching in Level III to be the most helpful aspect. I had not previously experienced a coaching type of working relationship, and at first I was not sure that I 'needed it.' But I found it to be a valuable and enriching experience.
