Women at the helm
Meet three women bank presidents
who blazed trails in America's
banking history.
Evelyn Tome (1855-1927)
After she was widowed at 42,
Tome-later Evelyn Frances-
inherited the presidency of Cecil
County Bank in Maryland. She was
then elected to lead Elkton National
Bank, making Tome the first woman
to be president of more than one
bank simultaneously.
SMALL BUSINESSES SPEAK OUT
Mary Miller (1843-1921)
Miller was living on her ranch when
coal deposits were discovered on
the property. One of the things she
did with her new fortune was to
found a town, Lafayette, Colo. To
establish the town, she opened a
school, constructed churches and
started a bank, the Lafayette Bank
and Trust Company, which opened
in 1900.
Anna Martin (1843-1925)
Martin, a German immigrant, gained
a strong work ethic helping out at
her uncle's dry goods store. She
eventually opened her own store,
then founded the Commercial Bank
of Mason in Mason, Texas, in 1901,
which made her the country's first
woman bank president from outside
the U.S. -Julie Kendrick
