Nice Shots Fills a Niche

In the late 1990s, when
Friday afternoon tee times
were a hot commodity, Tom
Rustad, a 51-year-old club
maker with an aerospace
degree, encouraged golfi ng
friends and acquaintances
to form a club without real
estate. Known more
formally as an MGA
Affi liate Golf Club,
Rustad's group wanted
a regular weekly
game without the
commitment of joining
a club or a league tied to one course.
Club members were not that price conscious,
Rustad noted, but they were pressed
for time; most had fl exible schedules but
didn't have weekends free. " People's lives
are fairly busy. They wanted to play a variety
of golf courses, they needed to play on
Fridays, and I made it so all they had to do
was show up, " he says.
Now, working out of his home in Columbia
Heights, Rustad organizes 10 golf
outings during the summer at both public
and private courses for his members. The
events include individual and team formats
so that the competitive members can

put their USGA Handicap Indexes
to good use, which is part
of the reason Rustad formed the
club in the fi rst place.
" They were looking for more
out of their golf experience,
including keeping an offi cial
handicap, " Rustad says.
" People's lives are fairly busy. They wanted
to play a variety of golf courses, they

In fact, competitive net golf has proved
popular with Nice Shots members, who
fi eld at least two teams every year for the
MGA Net Team Championship. Some years
the club fi elds as many as four teams.
" That's been a great event to promote to
our members-it gives them incentive to
keep their games sharp through the end of
the season, " Rustad says.
Sharp enough that a Nice Shots team has
taken home the trophy on two occasions-
2006 and 2010. No doubt the club is hoping
for another win at the 20th MGA Net Team,
September 4-5 at the Preserve and Pines
courses at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa.
