Hope Springs
Eternal in Golf

O
ne of the great things about this game that we
are all hooked on is that it encourages a glasshalf-full
sense of optimism. Few golfers spend
their time looking back (even though it was just a short
while ago that we hung up our clubs and concluded the
2012 golf season) when they can look ahead to rounds of
golf with their buddies walking green fairways under Minnesota's
warm, sunny skies. With each
new golf season, hope springs eternal.
As the new MGA President I thought
it would be appropriate to introduce
myself. I am originally from behind the
Steel Curtain, a
diehard Steelers
fan,
from Pittsburgh, Pa. I came to Rochester,
Minn., fresh out of Carnegie Mellon
University, as a design engineer at IBM.
Peggy, a marvelous woman from Wisconsin,
agreed to be my bride; we recently
celebrated our 30th anniversary. Not
sure what I did to deserve such a beautiful
wife and mother to our children, but
I'm not complaining. She is a Packers fan, which made Super
Bowl XLV a bit challenging-but it probably worked out for
the best as her team won. We have two wonderful children,
Kelly and Brian, who both live and work in the Twin Cities.

like the rest of you. Peggy and the kids have followed suit,
and we are now a golfing family that requires golf courses
to be a part of any vacation.
After being the president of several men's golf clubs, I
decided to step up my involvement in golf administration
by joining the board of the Minnesota Public Golf Association.
I spent six years working with that outstanding group,
culminating with a two-year term as MPGA President.
Along the way I was involved with organizing the 2004 U.S.
Amateur Public Links at Rush Creek Golf Club and working
with Dick Bennett, the tournament chairman. After
that I decided to increase my involvement with the MGA
as an officer, which leads me to today. I have also joined the
First Tee of Rochester board of directors and have been a
coach for the kids.
I am really looking forward to the next two years as president.
I get to be around people who are passionate about
the game of golf and a staff that is unparalleled in the industry.
The MGA is held in high esteem by its allied golf
associations, which is no surprise given the quality of the
people. I am humbled to represent you with those groups.
Although I still call Rochester home, I've found that golf,
like life, has led me down many new roads. Should our
paths cross in the future, please take a moment to say hello.
Let's all hope for an early start to the season, like last year.
