to realize why great players are drawn
to the course: Despite the chilly winds,
Portrush has a California feel to its
Harry Colt-designed layout, with plenty
of spectacular views of the ocean from
elevated perches, but almost no blind
shots and few unplayable recoveries.

little deception.

Muskie, a 75-year-old retiree from the
North Atlantic Rescue service-was
indispensable when it came to choosing
clubs and gauging the advisability
of certain carries. The greens are huge
at Portrush, but the putting surfaces are
true and predictable. Architect Martin
Ebert has replaced the course's two bland
fi nishing holes with a new 17th and 18th
for the 2019 Open.

Republic of Ireland to play at Carne Golf

Links in North Mayo. This wild, remote
course outside Belmullet is as much fun
as seaside links golf can provide. The
ocean vistas are stunning, the dunes
are enormous, and the twists, rises and
falls of the fairways between them are

Hackett didn't have to move much earth
to uncover the original 18 holes, and
now Ally McIntosh has created an even
