Dominant on the local junior golf scene,
Isabella McCauley, 17, of Inver Grove
Heights, smashed the glass ceiling during
the annual Minnesota Golf Champions,
Oct. 3 at Minneapolis Golf Club: not
only is McCauley the youngest winner
in the tournament's 46-year history, she
is its first female champ, going wire-towire
with rounds of 66-71-70-207, 9
under par, to finish two shots ahead of
professional Trey Fessler.
" I've always said I love playing this
tournament because you get to play
against the guys. It's really fun because
they have a different game-they hit
it so far, so it's fun to watch them and
compare yourself. This is my fourth time
playing this event, and there's never a lot
of girls in it, but it really means a lot to
be able to win it. "

McCauley began the final round with a
36-hole total of 70-70-140, and tied for
the lead with Lydia Swan, of Erie, Pa., the
latter the only player to have broken 70
in the elite field of forty-one 14-18 yearold
players-there were qualifiers held
around the country to gain entry into
this tournament-during the first two
rounds at Koasati Pines at Coushatta, in
Kinder, La. In other words, this was not
an easy course. So, when McCauley, the
'20 runner-up made an eagle and three
birdies on the front nine, followed by
eight pars and a final birdie at the 18th
for a 5-under-par 67, and a 207 total,
the odds on her winning the tournament
should have been heavily in her

shot behind the co-leaders, and made
seven birdies on the way to a bogey-free
65, a 206 total-one-shot better than
McCauley, who claimed second place for
