2024 Economic
Impact Report
due this Spring
The Minnesota Golf Association, in collaboration
with its allied golf industry partners
and the National Golf Foundation,
announced Jan. 5 that it is undertaking a
new economic impact study to be published
this
spring. This

The 27th season of the MGA Senior Tour
concluded with nearly 4,500 rounds
played by 662 members. Many positives
came out of the 2023 season, including
gaining new members while offering
fun-but-challenging host sites. An
additional 18-hole individual major, The
Rebbie Open, was added to the schedule
to honor former MGA executive director
Warren J. Rebholz. It offered higher
player point totals, in addition to more
generous gift certificate awards. With
the popularity and success of our first
major, we are considering additional
" majors " in 2024. Stay tuned.
Overall, the senior tour succeeded by
creating numerous opportunities for
male and female senior amateur golfers
to explore new courses and participate
in fun competitions. These successes
add to the senior tour legacy and fulfill
its mission to create lasting memories
and foster the formation of new friendships.
It was great to see some familiar
faces, as well as meet all the new members
who joined us for the first time
this season.
To conclude the regular season, The
Wilds Golf Club in Shakopee held this
year's MGA Senior Tour Finals. The top
players from each section who qualified
for the event (84 in total) were greeted
with a challenging golf course decked
out in brilliant fall colors. The winners

Looking ahead to 2024, the senior tour
schedule includes six all-section events-
open to all members, as the events of each
section are-at both familiar and new
venues. We think it's an exciting mix of
varying individual and team formats.
The 2024 season will wrap in dramatic
fashion with two popular competitions.
Brackett's Crossing Country Club plays
host to the 28th edition of the MGA
Senior Tour Finals Sept. 30 in Lakeville,
and the Royal Golf Club is the site of the
7th annual MGA/WSGA Senior Tour
Cup Matches Oct. 7-8 in Lake Elmo. The
MGA seniors hope to improve on their
1-5 record against their Wisconsin rivals.
The 2024 senior tour membership
registration opens Feb. 5, and event
registration begins March 4. Please

represents the fourth
such economic impact study compiled and
completed on behalf of the golf industry in
Minnesota since 1998. (The most recent
study was prepared using 2016 data and
published in 2019.)
" Conducting this study will allow the
MGA and our allied associations to demonstrate
the far-reaching impact of the golf
industry in our state, " says Jon Mays, MGA
executive director and chief operating officer.
" Previous studies have established the
golf industry as being on par with industries
such as milk production ($1.6 billion);
spectator sports ($752 million); and surgical,
medical equipment and supplies manufacturing
($3.6 billion). This clearly demonstrates
the importance of golf courses and
other golf-related activities to our local communities
and the state economy at large. "
In the last
study, the total economic
impact of golf-related activities (that is, core
industries such as golf facility operations,
construction and capital investment, plus
enabled industries like real estate, hospitality
and tourism) generated approximately $2.3
billion in direct, indirect and induced economic
output; $743 million in wage income;
$201 million in state and local tax revenues;
$480 million in visitor spending and nearly
25,000 jobs.
With the golf industry riding an unprecedented
wave of participation following the
global pandemic, the results from the new
study are expected to eclipse those published
in 2019.
Nationally, the U.S. golf economy accounts
for $102 billion in goods and services, and
generates an estimated total economic
impact of $226 billion, a 20% increase since
the previous findings were released in 2016.
