" The year before we started, there were 13,000 rounds, and last year
we had 21,000, " Sindelar says. " When we started, memberships were
probably at 100, and now we're at 164-which, for our business model,
is perfect. Being semiprivate, it's a constant struggle between 'We want
to keep our members happy, but we really want the public.' "
Sindelar estimates that 70-80% of their members are original
Hastings Country Club members.
" They love the course, and they love this space, " she says. " It's not
that they need that private club mentality. Hastings is a 'small town,'
even though it's 23,000 people. They really rally around and support
local businesses. [Many people] don't go to a golf course restaurant in
the middle of the winter, but they sure do in Hastings. "
Schmierer lives most of the year in Scottsdale, Arizona, but has a
lifetime membership at Hastings and plays there several times a summer.
Conzemius now lives in Edina and is a member at Interlachen,
but in 2024 he returned to his boyhood course and won the MGA
Players Championship at age 39. He took great pleasure in seeing so
many familiar faces during the week.
" There's just so much pride in the old Hastings Country Club, "
Conzemius says. " [It's] an old cast of characters from this town-a lot
of farmers, a lot of blue-collar folks that love the game of golf. I just had
such a blast with all the members there, the people in the community
and people that just took great, great pride in the golf course. "
Given the community's passion for the game and its propensity for
overcoming course closings, reorganizations, renaming and relocations,
golf will no doubt be played in Hastings in another 100 years
