W
ill winter ever leave us? As I sit here writing
this letter, looking out the window in t he
middle of March, I see only a white landscape.
It sure seems like it's been with us long enough
already-but it's still hanging on. We
clearly were spoiled by last year's early
start. This year, I've even heard of some
of our own snow birds delaying their return.
Good for them. For the rest of us,
bring on the green already. Certainly, as
surely as spring follows winter, we'll be
playing by the time you read this issue of
Minnesota Golfer.
One part of our mission statement
is to promote the game of golf. Toward
that end, w e recently held a st rategic
planning session with a portion of our
directors and leadership; you'll hear
more about that as we go through the year. In this issue,
I want to focus on junior golf. I personally believe that it
is the key to growing the game in the future. I am already
impressed with all of the opportunities we have for our
juniors, whether it's our MGA Junior Program, the PGA
Section's junior program, The First Tee, the AJGA, or all
of the many junior golf programs, camps or school teams
that play at MGA member clubs all around our state.
I want to thank all those who offer and drive these programs.
Your efforts will pay off in the form of avid adult
golfers down the road.
We need t o take the time t o allow our children and
grandchildren the opportunity to experience what we already
know is fun and rewarding. I know I got our kids
involved early, and they have grown up to love the game
and the time they get to participate in it. There were chalLittle

" kiddy par " would have on
our children's enjoyment
of the game.
lenges along the way-like when they were ready to quit
because they were tired of getting triple and quadruple
bogeys. That's when I came up with an idea called " kiddy
par. " Little did I realize the affect that would have on their
enjoyment of the game. Kiddy par is double par and a different
target to shoot for. All of a sudden, their 7s on a par
4 were a birdie. Boy, were they now excited to get a seven.
What do you need to do to make sure your juniors enjoy
the game? It truly becomes a life-time pursuit. What
can you do to give back to the game? Support a junior
starting today.
As I continue to age through the circle of life I may
eventually have to go back to kiddy par for my own enjoyment...
maybe I'll call it " Old Codger Par! "
See you on the links-and soon!
