the human side of the
game goes well beyond
mere curiosity. Sachau, an MGA
member at Mankato Golf Club
and a professor of industrial psychology
at Minnesota State UniHANDICAP

" mesearch, " a term psychologists
use to describe researchers who
study their own problems. In Sachau's
case, that problem is golf.

he notes.
" Now we're looking at studying
people at their best-the fun,
healthy and normal aspect of behavior
of the recreational golfer at
his or her peak, " he explains.
Sachau has also undertaken rewho
are interested in studying the elite professional
golfer, Sachau explains, but there
are millions of recreational golfers and surprisingly
little research on their behavior.
" I really like studying regular golfers because
they're underrepresented, " he says. " It's
fun to give them insight into their behavior. "
Th is spring Sachau partnered with the
MGA and conducted a series of four surveys
with 39,000 mem bers, who proved
search on golfer attitudes with a Golf Digest
panel of 8,000, and last year presented his
research to the World Scientifi c Congress
of Golf. In addition to teaching, Sachau
is also the director of the Organizational
Eff ectiveness Research Group at Minnesota
State Mankato, which provides human
resource consulting services to the U.S. Air
Force, United Health Group, the State of
Minnesota, the London Metropolitan Police
and Ameriprise Financial.
