erhaps the biggest number you will hear in regards to
the 41st Ryder Cup matches is $135 million-the estimated
economic impact to Minnesota as a result of
the event being held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska.
The economic impact numbers are based on studies done of
past Ryder Cup events, and according to Patrick Hunt, general
chair for the 2016 Ryder Cup, the numbers this year will be big.
" It is a testament to Minnesota golf fans and the popularity
of the Ryder Cup that a market the size of the Twin Cities and
Minnesota can compete-from a demand standpoint-with
the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois, where the Ryder
Cup took place in 2012, " he says.
If it's hard to wrap your head around $135 million, perhaps
these numbers will help: There will be an estimated 250,000 attendees
for the week of Ryder Cup, nearly 80 percent of which
are national and international visitors coming from outside of
Minnesota. Plus, don't forget the viewers watching at home.
Upwards of 500 million households from 160 countries/territories
around the globe are expected to tune in.
These numbers can translate into revenue for local hotels,
restaurants and the hospitality industry, and future convention
and visitor bureau business.
" I don't feel anyone can logically debate that when a large
number of patrons are coming from out of state they utilize
hotels, rental cars and restaurants, and partake in other activities
during their stay, " Hunt says. " Regardless of that number,
there is one metric that is beyond reproach-sales tax paid to
the State of Minnesota. Estimates of our taxes paid exceed $5
million-not counting what vendors will pay. All of the events
will contribute significantly to state coffers. "
