PRAIRIE RIDGE GOLF COURSE
A
s you exit the southern suburbs
on I-35, you'll fi nd a trove
of towns steeped in history
and tranquil beauty. The golf
courses along this route often
have a story behind them, too.
Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna is a fi ne
example. While there was a private course already
in town-Owatonna Country Club-the Kaplan
brothers, Kennard and (longtime city father)
Buzz, with the help of their father, Reuben,
fulfi lled a dream by acquiring land and establishing
the course in 1963. It has been a muni since
1966 and today is a mature parkland course.
WASECA LAKESIDE CLUB
Established in 1919, the private Owatonna
Country Club is a Goldstrand design that plays to
a par 71 at 6,118 yards from the white tees. (It's the
only private club on this tour.) The club's Straight
River Bar & Grill boasts an impressive menu that
includes Ahi Tuna and Bluegill.
East of Owatonna, Dodge Country Club's 18 is
no slouch, playing to a 70.0/123 slope/rating from
the whites, which are the tips on this track. Joel
Goldstrand also created the reversible nine-hole
Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Janesville.
The Oaks Golf Club in Hayfi eld debuted in
1977 with an 18 that plays just over 6,000 yards. Its
grill offers appetizers, burgers and wraps, and they
