2013. The River was completed in 2015,
and then the Canyon went under the
scraper and was fi nished last fall. A smart
irrigation system was installed, the bunkers
were lined and fi lled with new sand,
the tilt in some fairways (which often
carried good drives into the rough) was
leveled out, and the greens' renowned
" lake-effect " break of 7-8 degree pitch
was reduced to 3-4 degrees. Additionally,
Brauer cleared out some areas to open
up dramatic views of Lake Superior.

picked up nearly 175 yards, and while
the Canyon course footprint remained
unchanged, the River course had three
holes reconstructed. The par-3 sixth and
short par-4 seventh were combined into
a long downhill par 4 heading toward the
lake, while the former par-5 eighth was
turned into a par 4 and par 3-resulting
in the nine becoming par 35.
" It's one of the best-looking tee
shots on the course, " Ekstrom says of
hole number 6. " It's a dramatic look
over the fairway and you're looking at
Lake Superior. As we like to say, we've
got an ocean view up here in northern
Minnesota. It's pretty gorgeous. "
Down Highway 61 in Duluth,
Ridgeview Country Club fi nished off
renovation work from a master plan
created over a decade ago. Updates along
the way included new locker rooms,
a kitchen in the clubhouse, and concrete
cart paths outside-plus a bunker
program that really sharpened up the
course, according to Ridgeview head
PGA professional Paul Schintz.
The club had conducted member surveys
about desired improvements, and
the bunkers, an expensive project, often
showed up in those surveys. However,
according to Schintz, active leagues and
junior programs brought in the requisite
revenue, so the club hired Duininck to
rebuild the 33 bunkers and add a new
SUPERIOR NATIONAL
drainage system last summer.
" The impetus was we had the
money, " Schintz says. " If you are going
