to attack the bunkers, you have to do
them right. It was $360,000. That's 33
bunkers at roughly $10,000 apiece, and
[we thought] if we are going to do it,
let's spend another $30,000 dollars on
white sand to make them pop. "

" We had the wettest summer
that I can remember [in
my 21 years], and the bunkers
were the driest, " Schintz
says. " It was that good. "
Less Sand, More Fun
Time itself can be a subtle
excavator,
like at Inver
Wood Golf Course in Inver
Grove Heights, where the shifting rocky
ground often broke the existing irrigation
system. The club decided against
temporary fixes and put in a new
system on both the 18-hole course and
Executive 9 that is designed to put water
exactly where it's needed.
But that's not the only change at the
course: In 2016, Inver Wood rebuilt and
expanded its driving range, regraded
some fairways to improve sightlines,
made clubhouse improvements, and
redid the bunkers-reducing the square
footage of sand from 67,000 to 37,000.

designed to increase pace
of play and make the
bunkers more maintenance
friendly.
" Many of the bunkers
were flash bunkers with
steep upward slopes
that were
PGA head professional
Leon Otness says. " All the bunkers are
now banked with a thicker fescue grass
that almost gives it a British Open-style
look. "
The bunker project included filling a
large waste bunker in front of the pond
near the 18th green, which coupled with
some regrading, improved the course's
finishing hole.
" We had tons of sod come in on 18.
Grass goes to the end of the pond, " Otness
adds. " It's definitely a nicer looking 18th
hole with that bunker gone. " MG
