BROOKS
KOEPKA
3M Open News
Five-time major winner and perennial
fan-favorite Phil Mickelson and twotime
U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka
have officially committed to the 3M
Open,
Twin Cities,
July 4-7, 2019, at the TPC
tournament organizers
announced in March. Koepka, the PGA
Tour Player of the Year and ranked No.
3 in the world, joins Mickelson, who is
ranked 20th in the world rankings, as
the fifth top-20 golfer scheduled to play.
In recent news, Bryson DeChambeau
(5th), Jason Day (12th), Patrick Reed
(16th), Siwoo Kim (54th) and K.J.
Choi (825th) have also made commitments.
Mickelson,
who has won 44 times
on the PGA Tour-including this
past January at Pebble Beach-called
the timing of the tour stop over the
national holiday perfect for his schedule,
and said it was exciting to see the
tour return to the Twin Cities. The last
time a regular PGA Tour event was held
in Minnesota was in 1969, when the
long-running St. Paul Open, held at the
Keller Golf Club from 1930-1968, was
renamed the Minnesota Classic and
moved to Braemar Golf Course. Frank
Beard won with a 15-under-par 269.
Thanks to James E. Kelley and his
book, " Minnesota Golf, " for the St.
Paul Open history and this explanation
of why the locals " loved " the
event: " It was all there-drama, showmanship,
thrills, heartbreaks and parblasting
beyond reason, " he wrote.
