TIPS FROM THE PROS
Plugging Power Leaks
Increased clubhead speed can provide more
distance with a properly sequenced swing.

T
he golf training aid business is fi lled with
devices and contraptions that promise more
distance. But be wary of ads that guarantee an extra
20-40 yards, because chances are that just isn't
going to happen. But good technique and sound
understanding can increase clubhead and ball
speed by a few miles per hour.
There are several reasons why so few of us are
maximizing our distance. It's important to identify
any " power leaks " that might be robbing a student
of potential distance. An example of this is failing
to apply clubhead speed at the proper time.
To determine whether this is your issue, invert the
club and hold it below the head-then make a full
swing and listen for the swish. If the swish noise is
occurring toward the bottom of the swing, you are
sequencing properly.
Keep your grip pressure light and create as much
speed as possible. You will never achieve your maximum
distance without more speed.

approach. The bunker-free
fairway has plenty of " rolling
hills " and mounds that can
mess with the second shot.
" You're sitting center left
of the fairway, " says manager
Peter Vukelich, " but the ball
might be a little below or
above your feet. "
At 150 yards, the landing
area is wide. But the fairway
narrows moving toward the
green, where a pond sits front
left and a bunker lies behind.
The ample green is sloped
back to front, facing the pond
and a false front.
" If the hole is cut back middle
or back left, I'm playing
for the center and not getting
too crazy, " says Vukelich. " Just
put it on, get my two-putt and
walk away. " -Joseph Oberle
