n the elevated tee of No. 9 at Stones Throw, the
choice is a tough one: a three wood and then a
long iron approach, or busting a driver and gambling
that your golf ball has brakes.
A creek crosses the fairway at 260 yards (285 in spots to clear
it), and a downhill slope can carry a well-struck drive to the
water. Go too far left and a large willow blocks the approach.
Lay up left to 200 (just right of a fairway bunker) for a fl at lie,
but a long approach-into a small, pear-shaped green guarded
by mounding and a bunker front left-remains.
" The best play is to hit a high three wood that settles on top
of the hill, " says superintendent Travis Kiel. " Then hit a nice,
long iron into a small green. "
