So, shortly after Y.E. Yang defeated Tiger
Woods on the 18th green in the 2009 event, the
club tore up the greens and rebuilt them with Penn
A-4 creeping bentgrass, a strain that is purported
to have exceptional heat and cold tolerance. It also
replanted the fairways with Dominant X-treme
7 creeping bentgrass for its cold-weather performance.
Additionally,
Hazeltine reimagined and expanded
its practice facility to include a 110-yard wedge
range, a two-sided practice tee, 11 target greens, a
large chipping green with bunkers, and a tee area
and bunker for juniors.
In 2011, the club announced completion of a
brand new clubhouse, described as " modern and
ageless in design, similar to the neighborhood
clubs in England and Ireland. " That should make
members of the European Ryder Cup team feel
right at home.
Finally, this past fall, the club rounded out its
renovation project by redoing all 107 bunkers on
the course and putting in a new drainage system.
" It was just dirt and then sand before, so every
time it rained, the bunkers would just fi ll up like
cereal bowls, " says Chandler Withington, head golf
professional at Hazeltine. " It didn't take much rain
at all, and there would be standing water in our
bunkers and we would have to pump all the water
out. If we got rain during one of the rounds of the
Ryder Cup, we wouldn't have the time to pump out
all of the water and restore 107 bunkers. "
Withington says the bunkers hadn't been
touched in 15 years and were in defi nite need of
an upgrade. The new drainage system consists of
peat rock gravel sprayed with a sealant that allows
water to pass through while the sand adheres to
the bunker walls. The bunker project was fi nished
just before snow began to fall in mid-November,
