More Than a Score

There are
people who
live their lives
as though
inspired, and
they leave us
in awe.
ompetitive golf can be lonely,
as much of the game's calculations,
emotional ups and downs,
and triumphs and losses play out inside the
golfer's mind. Sometimes it rises to a level
beyond performance, more than just a game
of the lowest strokes taken. Occasionally it
reaches the thin air of sublime meaning. At
least, we mortal spectators try to find the
words to ascribe to it a kind of supernatural
significance.
One such day was the recent U.S. Women's
Open Sectional Qualifying at Windsong
Farm Golf Club in Independence. After 36
holes of stroke play, the medalist advances to
our U.S. Women's Open Championship July
9-12 in Lancaster, Pa. The last golfer to make
the round trip, and bring home the trophy,
was Edina's Hilary Homeyer Lunke in 2003.
This year, Maple Grove's Sarah Burnham
successfully completed the difficult first leg
with rounds of 74-77-151. Claiming the
lone qualifying spot is a test of skill, physical
strength and mental fortitude. What makes
Burnham's achievement significant is that
she did it on a day when the wind chills and
wind gusts flirted with a good evening league
score-both the temperature and mph were
in the mid-30s. What's more, Windsong's
6,222-yard, par-71 setup played to a course
rating close to 77, making Burnham's medal
score of 151 more like shooting 3-under-par.
Then there is New Prague's Kenzie Neisen,
who was recently featured in Golfweek magazine
(May 18). The 19-year-old former Class
3A high school champ is having a standout
freshman year at Oklahoma State University,
where she has helped the Cowgirls to two
wins, plus an individual win at the Big 12
Championship. Off the course, she and her
family have dealt with the gut-wrenching ordeal
of having not one but two siblings with
Hunter syndrome, a rare genetic disorder
that mainly affects boys. Neisen lost her first
brother, Sam, 16, in 2009, and her second
brother, Tom, 15, in late March.
Through it all, writes GW reporter Beth
Ann Nichols, the Neisen sisters [older sister
Steffi is also a competitive golfer] learned to
find joy in all circumstances.
While we tend to praise the obvious winners,
those competitors who come out ahead
at the end of the round (as we do inside
the pages of this magazine), there are people
who live their lives as though inspired,
whether or not they win on the golf course,
and they leave us in awe.
