Which local phenom survived a playoff to make match play at Royal Troon, Scotland,
and the 1984 British Ladies Amateur (going on to win the championship), became
a member of the winning U.S. World Cup Team at Royal Hong Kong Golf Club later that
summer, and, after turning professional, was named rookie of the year and eventually won a
major on the LPGA Tour?

In the previous issue of Minnesota Golfer, we asked: Who was the fi rst golfer
to win both the MGA Amateur and Senior Amateur championships? Neil
Croonquist was a popular answer, but not the correct one. Jimmy Wong,
playing out of Eagle Valley Golf Course in Woodbury with a 29.9 Handicap
Index, successfully answered with Harold P. Bend. Bend, from the Town &
Country Club in St. Paul, won the 1902 MGA Amateur Championship after
going 19 holes with Ben F. Schurmeier at The Minikahda Club. Two years later he won again,
besting Clive T. Jaffray in 37 holes at the now-defunct Meadow-Brook Golf Club in Winona. Two
decades later, during the second edition of the new MGA Senior Championship, Bend fi nished
with rounds of 82-80-162, four strokes better than the defending champ, Frank T. Heffelfi nger.
Two years later, Bend handed a six-shot defeat to his 1904 rival, Jaffray, with rounds of 8279-161
at Minikahda.

Q Why is there an " L " next to my course handicap?
A In the case of maximum handicap index limits (the
USGA Handicap System allows a maximum Handicap
Index of 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women), your club's
handicap committee may allow for a higher local handicap
for certain players, which are designated with an
" L " -intended for " local use only. "
Q How do I post a score for a hole not completed?
A For holes that are started but not fi nished, such as during match play, players must post
these scores for handicap purposes. The golfer uses the " most likely score " standard, which is
the number of strokes already taken plus, in the player's best judgement, the remaining strokes
needed to complete the hole from that position more than half the time.
