A
great fi nishing hole can either offer a last chance at
birdie or can literally fi nish you off. That's the case at
Westfi eld, where risk-reward hole No. 9 provides golfers
the opportunity at redemption or ruin.
The hole doglegs left around a large pond that can be carried with a
drive of 235 to 240 yards from the tips. But the tree-lined fairway presents
plenty of problems.
" When you do go over the pond, you still have to be on the correct (right)
side of the fairway to have a decent angle of approach because of the trees, "
says head professional Brian Paulson.
A fairly fl at green with subtle movement is protected by a front left bunker
and two large cottonwoods with limbs arching overhead on the left.
For the best results, Paulson suggests a conservative approach: " Years
ago, I used to make more birdies laying up than I did going for it, " he says.
