A Local Legend: Robert Bly
Minnesota's fi rst poet laureate and the favorite
son of this region, Robert Bly was born on a farm
south of Madison in 1926. Ironically, the farm
on which he was born was adjacent to the land that
became Madison Country Club the next year.
Bly is a prolifi c author and poet, winning the National Book
Award in 1968. He was co-founder of the American Writers
Against the Vietnam War in 1966, and in 1990 found international
fame with Iron John: A Book About Men. The book took
on " men's issues " and spawned the so-called " men's movement. "
" The
biggest infl uence we had is in younger men who are
determined to be better fathers than their own fathers were, "
he said.

Museum in Madison.
Today, Bly and his wife,
Ruth, live quietly in the
Twin Cities and no longer
give interviews, according
to The New York Times.
