he modern professional athlete is often portrayed as a
talented, but jaded, individual who cares only of winning
and a weekly paycheck, and sometimes just the
latter. While that can be accurate in some cases, it generally
is not in golf, particularly when the Ryder Cup
matches roll around every two years.
The career record of Hall of Fame golfer Lanny Wadkins
shows that he played better in odd-numbered years than even,
and the Golf Channel's David Feherty asked him why:
" Ryder Cup, " Wadkins answered emphatically. " You had to
fi nish in the top 10 to make the Ryder Cup team. I would grind
my butt off in Ryder Cup years to get points and try to make
the team. I probably should have carried that over to even-numbered
years-I might have been a little more successful. "
In fact, Feherty said that his one Ryder Cup appearance-as a
member of the losing European side at Kiawah Island in 1991-
was the " high point " of his career that featured 10 wins worldwide,
including the 1986 Scottish Open, the oldest trophy in the
game.

Except, perhaps, for that year in 1999 at Brookline in Massachusetts,
when the U.S. players were talking about getting paid
for their participation (so they
could donate it to charity). Or
in 2008 (before the event at Valhalla
in Kentucky) when Ryder
Cup rookie Hunter Mahan erroneously
equated playing in
the matches to being " a slave for
the week " in Golf magazine. But
in most cases, wearing the colors
for the USA has meant a lot

It's worth mentioning that
those two Ryder Cups were the
only two the U.S. team has won
in the past 10 competitions. (Was it some extra U.S. team emotion
that fueled those wins?) But the eight U.S. losses in the past
20 years have stolen the headlines, prompting changes to the U.S.
team's approach to the event.
After public criticism following the 2014 matches at Gleneagles
in Scotland, a task force was formed that gave the U.S. team
players more input into the process-which began with helping
pick the team captain, Davis Love III. The changes included the
number of captain's picks increasing from two to four, the elimination
of Ryder Cup points earned from some fall events, team20
