History: Then
and Now

I
nside this summer issue of Minnesota Golfer, we share
some wonderful history about our great game and the
courses and people that helped shape it. We recognize
the contribution and leadership from Theodore Wirth Golf
Course and 100 years of municipal golf created by our visionary
public leaders in the Twin Cities. The Ferndale Golf
Links, though short-lived, had strong connections to notable
clubs and leaders of the game within our state. Minneapolis
Golf Club, celebrating its centennial, has allowed us
to highlight the club professionals that served them over the
years, five of which grace our Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.
While all eyes will be on Hazeltine National Golf Club this
fall for the Ryder Cup matches, one other notable international
competition will be just down the road at Interlachen
Country Club. The Junior Ryder Cup matches, between the
best U.S. and European juniors, will be contested the week
before. The matches may not get the same kind of international
coverage, but rest assured, some wonderful golf will
be played by these future stars. It might be your one time to
see these juniors up-close before they hit it big on the tours.
We are just starting to hit our stride for the MGA championship
season. USGA and state qualifiers are being held,
match-play events are being contested, and the senior tour
is off and running. All of this would not be possible without
our fantastic staff and the multitude of volunteers who put
in the hours to make our association the envy of the country.
If you're playing in any of these events or maybe supporting
an entrant, please take the time to say thank you. It goes a
long way.
You may be aware of the upcoming merger of the two
women's golf organizations, the MWGA and MWPGA, with
the Minnesota Golf Association. Both of these groups have
storied championship histories and have benefited amateur
women's golf as well as helped to grow the game over the
many years of their existence. I have been honored to work
with a number of the organizations' past and current leaders
in helping to orchestrate this joining of forces. I would like to
specifically thank Ellie Leyton, Ken Gerzsenyi, Marion Holly,
Barb Hanson and Tom Ryan for their passion and perseverAll

plans for the 2017 golf season and developing even more
opportunities for all of the female members of the MGA. I
couldn't be more proud or excited for what this can do for
the game in our state.
